“Elvis Presley’s ‘Heartbreak Hotel’: Celebrated in the Grammy Hall of Fame, Rolling Stone’s ‘500 Greatest Songs,’ and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”

About The Song

Would You Like to Check in with Elvis at the “Heartbreak Hotel?”
A news about the suicide of a lonely man who jumped from a hotel window inspired the lyrics of Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel.” The track was released as a single on January 27, 1956. The song production was accompanied by equally awesome musicians – Elvis’ band, The Blue Moon Boys, Chet Atkins on the guitar, and Floyd Cramer on the keyboard. The track was recorded 17 days before its official release.

The Writing of the Song
A high school teacher named Mae Boren Axton together with Jacksonville based singer/songwriter Tommy Durden wrote the song in 1955. The writers based the song on the real story of a man, who destroyed all his identity papers and jumped from a hotel window. The man left a suicide note with a single line, “I walked a lonely street.”

The Recording
Presley first performed “Heartbreak Hotel” during one of his live shows in December 1955. The reception of the song appeared lukewarm until he sang it again on the Stage Show in March 1956. It was then called Presley’s “staple repertoire” in live appearances.

“Heartbreak Hotel” wasn’t supposed to be included on Presley’s album. However, on January 10, 1956, he arrived at the studio with the song ready to be recorded. Even without the RCA’s approval, he made sure the song will be released. The whole production had to cope with their new recording studio. They just came from Sun Studio. Through it all, they successfully came up with an excellent output.

Lyric

🎵 Let’s sing along with the lyrics! 🎤

Well, since my baby left me
Well, I found a new place to dwell
Well, it’s down at the end of Lonely Street
At Heartbreak Hotel

Where I’ll be, I’ll be so lonely baby
Well, I’m so lonely
I’ll be so lonely, I could die

Although it’s always crowded
You still can find some room
For broken-hearted lovers
To cry there in their gloom

They’ll be so, they’ll be so lonely baby
They get so lonely
They’re so lonely, they could die

Now, the bell hop’s tears keep flowin’
And the desk clerk’s dressed in black
Well, they’ve been so long on Lonely Street
They’ll never, never look back

And they get so, they get so lonely baby
Well they are so lonely
They’re so lonely, they could die

Well, now, if your baby leaves you
And you got a tale to tell
Well, just take a walk down Lonely Street
To Heartbreak Hotel

Where you will be, you will be so lonely baby
Well you will be lonely
You’ll be so lonely, you could die

Although it’s always crowded
But you still can find some room
For broken-hearted lovers to cry there in their gloom

Where they get so, they get so lonely baby
Well they’re so lonely
They’ll be so lonely, they could die
